Every travel enthusiast starts to plan their next trip as we approach the new year. We all know that the more you can afford to stay at a destination, the better your travel experience. These are the cheapest places to visit in this list. They offer affordability and great value for money.

While $45 per night is not enough to get a dorm room in some countries, it can be used to buy a villa or a hotel room in other countries. For example, Canggu in Bali offers a private 2 bedroom villa with a pool for $50/night, while visiting Japan costs $50 per night and gets you a single bed on the ground floor of a small space.

These destinations are now more affordable than ever due to recent drops in the local currency or a lack of tourism.

Although we wouldn’t write a post about enjoying low prices at the expense of economic hardship, it is possible to visit these places now and not only get better prices but also help local businesses.

Before you book a trip, make sure to check the restrictions. This article has been updated to 2022 to include updated conversion rates and the cheapest places to visit. There are also a few bonus cheap places that you shouldn’t miss. Happy travel planning!

1. Indonesia

So 1st in the list Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022, It’s home to world-class surfing and white sand beaches. There is also world-class scuba diving.

UPDATE We recently returned from a trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia. While it isn’t the most expensive place in the country, it’s certainly worth a visit.

The archipelago is renowned for being one of the best 3 dive destinations in the world. There are many affordable accommodation options, especially when you consider that all room rates include full board and diving. Raja Ampat is a great place to go if your budget allows.

We know that Indonesia is currently one of the most affordable countries to visit.

One US dollar will buy you approximately 14,000 rupiah. This is roughly 2,000 more than 2018’s. You would have only been able to get 9,050 rupees for a dollar seven years ago.

Indonesia offers amazing value in accommodation, food, and transportation, as I mentioned in the first paragraphs. You can find beautiful guest houses, many of which are located in villas with pools, starting at $20 per night.

Delicious seafood and millennial favorites like “smashed avocado on toast” are available for $3. You can also rent a motorbike for as little as $15 per day.

Alcohol is the only thing that isn’t of high value. Indonesia has imposed a heavy tax on import booze. A low-quality bottle imported wine will set you back around $20 while a local drinkable wine will still cost you $13 to $15.

Bintang beer is not something to rave about but it is affordable at $1.50-$3. At a beach bar, restaurant or cafe, imported beer is twice as expensive.

We’ve been to many countries and tracked our spending, but Indonesia ranks among the top three best value countries. With a stronger dollar and a weaker rupee, it has never been more true.

Since 2020, Indonesia is no longer open for tourism and has become difficult to enter. If you are able and willing to go through the required quarantine and measurements, you will find huge discounts on accommodation and very grateful business owners.

You’ll also have the archipelago to yourself.

You must visit Raja Ampat and Sumatra, Lombok, Lombok, Gili Islands. Flores, Komodo National Park, Alor…and many more.

2. Mexico is one of the most affordable countries for North Americans to visit.

Mexico is a place we love to return to. It has a diverse and delicious food, friendly people, beautiful beaches, and all the amenities that you could want. So this becomes 2nd in the list for Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022.

It is one of our favorite countries to visit and one of few places where we can see ourselves staying long-term. You can visit so many amazing places in Mexico and so many things to do you could stay there for years.

Mexico’s low cost of living and a weak peso make it affordable. The US Dollar is currently at 20.5 pesos, which is amazing.

Although we’ve been to Mexico many times, we were not able to afford the $12.8 pesos when we visited in 2014. We thought that it was a good deal for money.

You can save money when you visit Mexico during peak season (November-March). This is when prices can soar (especially December), and most of the best spots are already booked.

Mexico’s great value will surprise you no matter where you go.

Tacos at 30 cents each, a kilo fresh prawns fish market for $3, Coronas and a slice lime for $1.50, strong margaritas while you’re buried in the sand only $1 each.

You can find low-cost long-distance buses and affordable flights on Viva Aerobus or Aeromexico’s internal flights.

Mexico offers many shops that North Americans will love, including Costco, Sams Club and Walmart.

Mexico has its own grocery stores, including Mega, La Comer and Soriana. You can save money by buying your groceries from Mexico and cooking your own meals.

Mexico is a great place to travel, and it’s also one of the most affordable countries.

Mexico, despite current restrictions on travel around the globe, is one of the easiest countries to visit in 2022.

3. India

India has been described as one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world.

All time favorite in the list for Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022,  It is both tranquil and chaotic. Filthy and pristine. Friendly and furious. Both frustrating and free. India is the epitome oxymoronic travel experience that makes it so wonderful.

India is probably the most interesting and bewildering country to visit, but it’s also the cheapest.

The Indian Rupee is currently trading at close to 75 rupees per dollar, which is 5 rupees less than what you would have received in 2021. This makes India a great place to travel if your dollars, euros, or pounds are tight.

When we last visited India, I bought the most inexpensive (yet delicious) meal I had ever eaten while traveling. A pile of puris (fluffy fried bread) was 20 cents and I also got two types of curries from a street vendor. It was amazing. The food was great and filled me up.

Although the meal cost was very low, we often ate all-you-can-eat thalimeals at as low as $1.50. We also drank fresh lime juice on the streets for only 15 cents per glass.

We were offered accommodation at Ashrams (it’s not much more affordable than that), and we paid for our hotels with decent, but basic double rooms starting at $5 per night.

You can travel around India on a tight budget depending on the type of bus or train you choose. A train between Mumbai and Kolkata covering 1,968km takes around 30 hours and costs around $11.

India is, in my opinion, one of the best places to visit and also one of most affordable countries.

4. Colombia

It quickly became one of our favorite Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022, countries after we returned from backpacking Colombia late 2016.

Friendly people, lush jungles, beautiful Spanish colonial cities, and stunning beaches make Colombia a dream destination for travelers.

In recent years, the Colombian peso experienced a huge drop. This is not good news for Colombians who want to travel or local economies. However, it gives budget travelers an incentive to visit this amazing country.

We met a couple from Medellin, who decided to retire in 2014 and move to Colombia. The peso has dropped 125% since their arrival, from 1,800 to the US Dollar, to 4,065, a remarkable 125% increase.

The peso has stabilized slightly, and is currently at 4,065 pesos per US dollar.

Colombia offers great value to travellers. Colombia offers a great deal, regardless of whether you are visiting with a dollar or a pound, euro, the yen, or the yuan.

UPDATE 2222: The value of the Colombian peso rose 17% in this year’s update. Colombia is now cheaper than ever, making it an attractive option for anyone looking to travel cheaply in 2021 and beyond. Colombia is one of the most accessible countries in terms of current regulations and entry requirements.

Delicious seafood was available for only a few dollars. Beautiful Spanish-style guest houses are available for rent for around $30 per night. You can also enjoy diving in the Caribbean for as low as $24/dive when you purchase a 10-dive package.

We stayed at some of the most luxurious hostels in Colombia. There were rooftop bars, fancy bars, and spacious rooms. One even had a jacuzzi!

Colombia is also a great place to go on tours and experience new things.

The 4 Day Ciudad Perdida Trek is a must-do and the Salento coffee tour (the latter costs only $2). Colombia is one the most affordable countries in the world and offers great value for money.

5. Cuba

Cuba is the best choice if you are looking for Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022 and a low-cost destination in the Caribbean.

While you can book an all-inclusive trip to Cuba , it is possible to travel there independently. This will give you a richer experience, and cost less. Cuba is a great choice for cheap travel.

Beautiful beaches, an unique Caribbean and Spanish feel and delicious cooking (contrary what many believe), friendly people, and amazing landscapes make Cuba a country you should consider.

It is possible for Americans to travel to Cuba under any of the permitted categories. Support for the Cuban People is what most people choose. It’s still confusing for American friends.

You will need to create an itinerary that includes activities that fulfill the requirements for Support for The Cuban Peoplecategory.

It was our highlight travel experience. We spent a month backpacking Cuba. Our most memorable moments were dancing on the streets of Cuba, hanging out at bars, exploring Havana, and trekking to the tobacco farms.

Cuba’s currency, the CUC (or the CUP) is the CUC.

CUC, which is tied to the US Dollar, will be used for accommodation, food at tourist restaurants and cocktails & beer. It can also be used for car rental, scooter rental, and Viazul bus.

CUP can be used to purchase smaller items, such as fruits and vegetables from local vendors, local buses and some peso-food shops.

Cubans love to live in casa particulares with the local families. This is the best way for you to make friends and have an authentic experience.

However, Airbnb has been growing in the country. There are many great places online that are also owned and managed by Cubans. Casas are $20-30 per night for 2 people; discounts for 1 person apply. Hotels cost $25-$25 per night, and can cost up to $180+.

Cuba is not only affordable, but the people are friendly (this guy insisted on buying us a glass of sugarcane juice)

Cuban restaurants can charge a different price depending on where you live and what restaurant you choose. For a full meal, you can expect to pay between $5 and $10.

Your casa can cook delicious traditional food so we recommend at least one night. Cocktails cost between $2 and $3 at a bar. For a small meal, you’d spend $1 if you wanted “peso food”.

Cuba is a great place to spend a day relaxing and enjoying the beautiful streets and beaches.

Museum visits, horseback riding, caving and other tours cost $5 to $30. Cuba is one of the most affordable countries to travel, and it has a very fair cost of travel.

6. Bulgaria

To return to our top-rated destinations for Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022, in Europe, Bulgaria was probably the most affordable country we visited.

Bulgaria is a beautiful region with charming old towns, amazing wine, gorgeous coastline, and friendly, ailak (relaxed) people.

The country has been a great choice for travellers for many decades. However, the recent drop in the Lev value on the global markets means that Bulgaria is now a better value than it was just few years ago. $1 USD = 1.72 LEV at the moment

We were amazed at the value we received for our money when we visited Bulgaria in 2016. Dariece, me, and a friend sat for more than five hours in a restaurant bar. We shared a huge platter of meat, vegetables and bread and consumed copious amounts wine.

We thought the bill was wrong or that we misread it in our double vision. We paid less than $30 that night for the bill, and we don’t know why it was so affordable.

We found great deals as we traveled around Bulgaria. Beautiful hostels in 200-year old buildings cost just $20 per night, and bottles of wine at restaurants that rarely exceed $8 were all available.

Bulgaria is a great place to go if you’re looking for a way to travel Europe and meet interesting people, taste the best wines, and see history without breaking the bank.

This is undoubtedly one of the most affordable European countries, and best places to travel this year.

7. South Africa

This list for Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022, would not be complete without Africa, one of the most adventurous and naturally blessed countries in the world. South Africa has too many things to see on a trip of less than 6 months.

You can’t beat SA for its beautiful coastline, amazing wildlife, friendly people, delicious Indi-afro Fusion food, great roads, and great prices.

This country is located at the southern tip of the continent and we believe it’s the ideal starting point for more adventurous travel to other countries in the region.

South Africa can be travelled to easily , especially if you rent a car (highly recommend).

The rand’s low cost makes South Africa affordable in 2022. A trip to South Africa, even though it isn’t trading as well at 15.95 rand per USD, is still affordable.

We received only 6.7 rand per dollar when we last visited ten years back, but it was still a great deal. For $40 per night, we paid around $7 for a meal and $10 to enter the amazing national parks.

Consider the current currency devaluation discount and you will see that these are all very affordable by 2022, even with the inflation rate since 2011.

But, there’s more. COVID is helping South Africa to reduce the cost of accommodation and tours to attract tourists.

You will find substantial discounts and enjoy the beautiful country almost entirely to yourself, while also contributing to the local economy or small businesses.

8. Turkey

Turkey is perhaps the most open-minded country in the region and best Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022. It attracts tourists with one of most beautiful and exciting cities on Earth, Istanbul.

This country also boasts a beautiful Mediterranean coastline, friendly people (especially in east), and a dazzling Islamic culture and architecture.

Turkey’s value for money has been excellent for many years. However, the current economic crisis in Turkey means that everything is now cheaper for tourists.

The Lira has fallen 44%, and is the lowest it has been since 2001. The current exchange rate of $1 USD is 13.30 Lira. This compares to January 2021, when it was 7.30 USD.

We are always amazed at the value for money in Turkey every time that we visit. For $5, you can enjoy delicious traditional Turkish cuisine. You can often share a meal here because the portions are so large.

You can find delicious kebabs for as little as $20 on the streets. Also, you can rent beautiful guest rooms in these places for less than $20 per night (more in major cities).

The cost of visiting mosques in Turkey is one of the biggest expenses. For example, some of the most beautiful ones in Istanbul can be as high as $10.

You might be able to visit a few mosques for a small fee, but not all.

Turkey is a great value for money. It’s also easy to get into the country by complying with the most recent restrictions and requirements.

9. Thailand

The Land of Smiles must be included on our list of Visit These Cheapest Countries 2022 cheap travel destinations. It may not be the most accessible country, but it ispossible. Just make sure you keep an eye out for the requirements.

Thailand is a country we love and that our budget backpacker heart still rejoices each time we visit.

Thailand has many places you can visit — there are cities, parks, and islands.

Although the Thai Baht has experienced some fluctuations and spikes over the years, it doesn’t make it any less expensive. Thailand offers the most value for money anywhere on Earth.

You can find beautiful guest houses and beach huts for as low as $15 per night. Delicious and delicious Thai food is available for less than $2 per plate. Scuba diving costs under $20 per dive makes Thailand one of the most affordable countries to visit.

We were amazed to find affordable rooms, even if they were very basic, when we first visited in 2008. When we returned in 2017, we were stunned to discover a luxury villa with a private pool for only $1,500 per month ($50/night).

Depending on your origin, the cost of flying to Thailand will be the largest expense. However, once you arrive in Thailand you will enjoy a low living cost as well as the warm welcome of the locals who made this area famous.

10. Greece

Greece would be at the top of the list if it were ranked in order of most beautiful and best value for money. It is amazing to see how such a beautiful place, right in the Mediterranean, could be so affordable.

Athens Airport is a great hub offering many great flights to other countries. Greece is one the most affordable places to travel to from the US, and it is also one of the most expensive places to fly from anywhere in the world.

Since 2002, Greece has been in the Euro. Despite the recent devaluation, Greece was considered a low-cost destination in Europe.

Greece has a great deal of value and is the ideal place to live in 2022.

We rented a stunning, modern studio apartment measuring 550 sq.ft with a view over the sea on Zakynthos Island for $20/night. Another apartment, 2 levels, with 1 bedroom and a pool was available near the south coast Santorini. It cost less than $20.

Greek food is delicious, and it’s easy to find tasty seafood dishes in restaurants for as low as $8. Greek chefs and restaurant owners are known for offering freebies to their customers, such as wine, appetizers, and desserts.

You’ll feel satisfied and full when you leave a traditional Greek restaurant.

Activities in Greece are often well priced, with good food and excellent accommodation. For $35, we did a free honeybee tour, an oil tour and tasting, and a half day cycle tour at $24; an incredible cooking class that included unlimited booze, food, and wine for $65; and winery visits with tastings for $5.

We also rented a boat on Corfu , and drove it around the island for an entire day. We paid $95 for the rental, plus $50 for gas. However, this was a great deal, considering that Sea-Doos or Jet Skis usually rent for about $50 per hour.

Overall, Greece is a great European country to visit. It offers the best value for your money on the continent.

It is also a top-rated value destination because of its position on the map and the quality of what you will find there.

11. Bonus! Argentina

Argentina is the right country for you, regardless of your interest in culture and history, nature, landscapes, cities, and wine. It’s also one of the most affordable countries to visit, as it is currently 2022.

Affordable Things to Do in Argentina

Argentina is a large country with many landscapes and areas that can be visited all year.

Argentina is known as one of the best places to fly fish in the world. Fly fishing in the Lake District, Patagonia is best during January or February. This is due to the warm temperatures and the ability to fish in all waters.

Winter months are the best time of year to trek in Patagonia’s mountains. El Chalten is in the south, which is dry with temperatures around 20C (68F), and is ideal for exploring the Fitz Roy and Cerro Tore peaks, as well as drinking beer on patios.

You must see El Calafate nearby and the Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier produces huge chunks of ice every few seconds.

These places in Argentina might not be enough to pique your interest. In 2017, the exchange rate was 18 Pesos per 1 US Dollar when we traveled to Argentina for the first time. The rate was 85 Pesos per 1 US Dollar in January 2021.

We are currently in Argentina. In January 2022 the Argentine Peso is in a massive dip. The economy is in trouble.

The officialexchange Rate is $1 USD =102.69 Pesos

There is a “blue Dollar” in Argentina. You can bring US Dollars in cash and exchange them at a cuava or exchange centers (such Pago Facil etc. You’ll get around 204 pesos per $1.

You can send money via Western Union, and get cash pesos from a WU branch to receive around 207 pesos per $1.

Right now, this is a cash economy. You’ll be charged the official rate if you pay with your credit cards. This is almost double. You’ll be charged huge fees to use an ATM and will receive cash at the official rate.

It’s mind-blowing. It’s amazing.

Argentina is a great country to visit in 2022.

The country has been closed to tourism since 2020, and for much of 2021. This is causing economic and social problems for Argentina. Visit Argentina now to help the people get back on their feet.

Although Argentina is not known for being the most affordable country to visit, it can be a great place to save money with the current instability in the peso. We love Argentina and recommend it highly.
